What Is Heilkunst?
The word Heilkunst comes from the German “HEIL” which means “healing, curing, making whole, remediation” and “KUNST” which means “art”. It could be translated as the Art of Remediation or the Art of Making Whole.
It was the word used in the major work of its creator Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, “Der Organon der Heilkunst”, which translates as the Organon of the Art of Remediation.
A full medical system for the cure and healing of disease
Heilkunst is the complete medical system founded by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843). It is based on the natural laws of cure and healing and employs homeopathic remedies as its main form of treatment. Heilkunst treatment promotes healing on all levels of our being—physical, mental, emotional, spiritual.
Heilkunst was re-discovered and expanded further in the 90’s (and to this day) by Steven Decker, California, USA, who has provided the most accurate translation to date of the extended Organon of Heilkunst, the magnum opus of Dr. Hahnemann’s system of medicine. In collaboration with Rudi Verspoor, Manotick, Canada, he created a body of work that is taught today at the Hahnemann College of Heilkunst in Canada. Heilkunst is constantly revised and expanded to this day. It is a living medical system, enriched constantly by new discovery in science and medicine.
Within this truly wholistic system of medicine we know that a disturbance in one aspect of our being will resonate on all other levels and over time we will experience discomfort and illness. A physical pain can lead to emotional stress (fear, irritability) in the same way as emotional stress can lead to physical illness (ulcers, headaches).
Heilkunst provides us with a map of disease and its different causes and jurisdictions. Its main target is primary disease and not just the symptoms of its manifestation. A primary disease is most often caused by a trauma or shock to the system. Each primary disease has only one remedy that can cure it effectively.
Once a primary disease is identified, it is easy to match it to its corresponding remedy. Rhus tox., for example, is made from poison ivy. It is the remedy for the treatment of poison ivy rash. Nat-s. is a specific remedy for concussion. The remedy for vaccine damage is made out the vaccine itself, so MRR in potency would remove the disease caused by MMR.
There are specific homeopathic remedies for a variety of emotional states, physical traumas and infections and for the many forms of chemical poisoning that exist today.
Dr. Hahnemann was the first and only scientist to ever make a clear distinction between cure and healing, between a real disease imbedded in the human system and a condition or symptoms caused by a mere imbalance.
Disease as a dynamic process
Heilkunst takes its views of disease to a new depth by scrutinizing the prevalent views of disease both today and in the past. The scientific world seems to be divided into two main belief systems.
One postulates that disease is purely material in nature, caused by germs and physical irritations and as such its cure should also be purely material, a mere canceling out of material symptoms or the killing of germs. Allopathic medicine holds such beliefs. Two hundred years ago, Dr. Hahnemann asked himself the obvious question, how can a material substance cause its own illness? Surely the cause had to come from outside and only its expression could be seen in physical form?
Another part of the health world today holds the belief that disease is not at all physical, but merely spiritual in nature. A vague imbalance of energies or negative thoughts is seen as its cause and healing is sought in the strengthening of inner forces that are also general and hard to pin down. To the extreme, the followers of such beliefs will exclude all physical treatment as suppressive and useless, focusing on energy work and prayer as its main tools.
Heilkunst follows the concepts of its founder which are based in observation and rational science and which include both the physical and the ethereal as valid arenas for disease and health.
Cure vs. Healing
For the first time in history, Dr. Hahnemann made the distinction between a mere health imbalance in the form of a nutritional deficiency or excess, and true disease. True disease requires medicine.
Based on laws of nature, disease can be cured by applying medicine based on the Law of Similars which postulates that a substance can cure those symptoms it is able to cause; “like cures like”. Regardless of the many different disease causes and its numerous manifestations in different people, each disease has its specific single remedy which can cure it.
Heilkunst has made great advancements in discovering which homeopathic remedy cures which disease and mapping out the various types of diseases there are to make it easier to diagnose and cure the many contemporary ailments.
On the other hand, mere imbalances caused by excess or deficiency, and which have not affected our health in a deep way, but can easily be resolved by supplying the missing substances (as in using supplements) or removing the excess irritation (as in toxicity). This is the realm of healing. It is ruled by the Law of Opposites, which is the one mostly applied in holistic healing of all kinds today.
It is necessary to repeat how important a discovery it was, this distinction between the cure of disease and healing of a minor condition or symptoms. Nowhere else in holistic medicine is this distinction made clearly and no other medical system or therapy operates based on solid principles of cure and healing as Heilkunst does today.
Without this distinction, we are left puzzled as to why therapies do not work for everyone and why they work sometimes and not at all times. Applied in the right way and in their right jurisdiction, all therapies will work to great effect. Learning to do so is the major focus of Heilkunst.
Heilkunst can achieve success in areas where western medicine is baffled and where single therapies have limited success. It offers solutions to known problems like chronic pain, toxicity and mental disease. It is a constantly evolving and open system and we hope it stays that way because that is, in our view, how science should be. For that matter, the human mind should also remain open for new information and knowledge.
What do symptoms mean?
Heilkunst makes another important distinction when considering what we have come to identify with disease—symptoms.
By observing the disease process in its entirety, it becomes clear that when we first contract a disease, we are barely aware of it happening.
Dr. Hamer of German New Medicine later confirmed with his detailed examination of the disease process, that the moment one contracts a disease it is barely ever felt consciously, except as a form of general malaise as feeling “off” or more typically as emotional stress.
It is usually when the body’s healing force is evoked to fight disease that we start feeling symptoms. Most of the discomfort felt when we are ill is related to our body doing its job. Fever, inflammation, phlegm, cough, pain and congestion of many varieties are all the effects of a healing process already in full force.
As important as it is to mark the divide between disease contraction and symptoms of healing, it is also important to make a distinction between a healing that is proceeding in the correct direction and healing that is stuck and cannot resolve.
The natural health movement seeks remedies to enhance the healing power of the body itself. Heilkunst, on the other hand, will endeavor to find out if a disease is still present that needs to be cured or if the healing is proceeding and what assistance our system needs to conclude its efforts in the fastest and least painful way. In that respect not all therapies are equal. Untimely use of one or another can not only be ineffective, but in some cases it can be suppressive or toxic when applied at the wrong time.
How Does Heilkunst Work?
Today Heilkunst has evolved to include a variety of diagnostic tools and treatment therapies, which can all contribute to improvement of health when applied correctly. The role of the physician is to co-ordinate a whole treatment approach that would best benefit the individual person.
Since we are constantly changing along with Nature and the Universe, of which we are an integral part, it is especially helpful to see our patterns of behavior, our cycles of expansion and contraction both on a physical and emotional level. This and many other insights are part of the learning involved in the Heilkunst treatment journey.
Three main levels of treatment in Heilkunst
Heilkunst covers the three main areas of health:
1. Nutrition and Lifestyle—the whole area of deficiency or excess in any of its manifestations. To restore balance through the Law of Opposites is a primary focus of true holistic medicine. The physical body and its health and maintenance are essential for healing to happen. A weak body or toxic lifestyle can not only block and slow down healing, but it will add many symptoms in addition to those of a real disease, making diagnosis difficult and confusing in most cases.
As many healed people can attest, adopting a healthy lifestyle contributes to an amazing health improvement and energy levels that were previously falsely attributed to one or another disease. Symptoms of toxicity, the lack of proper nutrients for the body to function, rampant dehydration and much more, contribute to an excessive amount of symptoms and disease names that are not true disease. Simple changes in lifestyle eradicate these efficiently with no need for further medicine to be used.
2. Medicine proper, in Heilkunst, consists of discovering the true diseases from which the person suffers and matching them to their corresponding specific remedy. The order in which this is done is highly individual as it depends on a variety of conditions that vary with each personal situation and characteristic makeup and lifestyle.
Although people have all kinds of complicating circumstances, with the methods and clear distinctions made in Heilkunst about the various types of diseases, it is not hard to create a treatment plan that is highly unique. At the same time it is based on solid principles of therapy that are equally applied with great success to any existing disease form.
Sequential Therapy, applied within the Heilkunst system, gives us the road map and tells us in what order the disease needs to be treated. Primary diseases are best treated in reverse order of their occurrence starting in present time and working our way backwards to birth. By following a natural order of cure of disease, we are able to completely eradicate each disease in a timely and efficient manner, without waiting and guesswork.
After all diseases created in our lifetime are removed, we can then apply specific homeopathic remedies for the effective removal of hereditary predispositions to disease which are called miasms. Those too are cleared in a particular order identified by natural law.
3. The third focus of therapy in Heilkunst is that of education of the person. Ignorance breeds disease. This is a powerful truth that, when understood in this context, allows us to bring light into the areas of shadow or stagnation in our lives. The light of knowledge and understanding has the power to dispel not only ignorance but also disease.
In this sense, Heilkunst helps the person participate in their own healing by showing the cause of their ailment and then explaining the process of healing. Making the many connections of why events happen in our life and what the nature of our trauma signifies, helps us grow through self-knowledge and leads to a desire to actively participate in our own healing process.
One Person—Many Therapies
In today’s world we readily have access to a multitude of holistic therapies or to the information about them. It is becoming increasingly difficult to choose which one is the best one for us.
Heilkunst, through a deep understanding of disease and healing, can match the therapies to the person. It can ascertain which therapy is best applied and also when to use it for maximum effect. Sometimes the timing of treatment is as important as what we choose to do for our health. For example, taking supplements at a time when our body cannot absorb them, will not give us their full benefit. Or starting a detoxification process when our organs of elimination are not functioning properly can cause a toxic overload of the system.
The ability to understand the way different therapies work and when to make use of them in order to achieve the best results for each individual patient is a great advancement in holistic science and medicine, and it is offered by Heilkunst today.
The Remedy As Artificial Disease
The idea of a remedy inducing the same disease that it aims to heal cannot be grasped logically until we realize that we are matching remedy to disease based on resonance. Remedies are curative only when they resonate with the disease. Disease and cure occur on a dynamic level and are not material or physical in nature. The effects and symptoms that appear as a consequence of the disease process or the action of a remedy (healing) are material.
Today, attraction based on resonance is becoming a popular concept. It goes like this. The remedy shifts our resonance and prevents disease from being attracted to us. Or we are able to use a remedy to annihilate disease based on resonance similarity which cancels the weaker of the two out. This is truly new and mind boggling, but nevertheless very practical and not hard to apply.
In that sense, Heilkunst is truly a medical system of the future which already exists and is growing today, developing tools and refining its therapeutic approach so that one day it will be easily available to many as a preferred form of medical care.
Heilkunst – The True Naturopathy Of Our day
In its scope and aims, Heilkunst covers the same ground as naturopathy set out to master, the wholistic restoration of health in the ill. The difference between the two is that naturopathy has not moved beyond health maintenance and re-balancing, using mostly the Law of Opposites. It uses supplements, herbs, body treatments, and even homeopathy and acupuncture with the purpose of restoring balance in the body and to trigger its innate healing forces into action.
Heilkunst makes an important distinction between what is true cure of disease and the healing process, creating out of this a complete medical system, not only able to heal and restore health but also to eradicate disease completely from the system through well founded principles of nature. The Law of Similars and the Law of Opposites are applied precisely where they are required and at a time that works best for each individual person.
Is Heilkunst Different From Homeopathy?
The term “homeopathy,” was used by Dr. Hahnemann to describe his use of potentised remedies to treat simple disease, based on the Law of Similars. He used it mostly in cases of disease of unknown cause and only identifiable by its symptoms.
His complete system of medicine, Heilkunst, as set out in his various writings, includes also the Law of Opposites which operates in the realm diet, nutrition, lifestyle, energy work, psychotherapy, even anti-inflammatory medicine.
